Staff Position in High-Resolution AGN Research at Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie, Bonn, Germany

The Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie (MPIfR) seeks for a talented, dynamic, independent researcher in observational radio astronomy for a fixed-term staff position in high-resolution active galactic nuclei (AGN) studies with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI).

The researcher will be appointed at the Radio Astronomy/VLBI department led by Prof. Dr. J. Anton Zensus.   The department main research topics focus in the investigation of compact extragalactic objects (AGN) and their broad-band emission, with special emphasis in very high resolution studies.  MPIfR staff members have access, among other facilities, to the VLBI correlator and the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg, both operated by the MPIfR.

We seek for a person to work in the field of very-high-resolution AGN studies, including the cutting-edge areas of space VLBI and/or millimeter VLBI. Technical mastering of the radio interferometry techniques is of advantage, as well as a good publication record and the ability to lead an independent research program, which includes a close collaboration with other members of the VLBI group, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students. The International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IMPRS) offers the opportunity in joint research with PhD students, their supervision and teaching at the program.

Interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply by submitting curriculum vitae, list of publications, research interests, and have three letters of recommendation sent to the above address (email or hardcopy) by December 1st, 2013.

The initial appointment as staff scientist is for two years with the possibility of extension after review.  The anticipated start date is in the 1st half of 2014.  The researcher will be employed at the framework of the German wage agreement for the public system (TVöD) in level 13, including benefits as the belonging to the German statutory health insurance and pension systems.
