Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Theoretical Astro & Plasma Physics (two posts)
Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics, 1 Keble Road, Oxford
Grade 7: £29,249 - £35,938 p.a.

Applications are invited for two ERC-funded postdoctoral positions. The positions are available from 1 April 2013 although later commencement will be negotiable. The posts will be for two years with the possibility of extension for up to a further three years subject to performance.
The postholders will be based in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics. They will be expected to carry out the research programme specified by the ERC grant “Extracting Science from Surveys of our Galaxy”: developing dynamical models of our Galaxy, predicting from them the results of surveys of our Galaxy, and drawing inferences about the structure and history of the Galaxy by comparing predictions with data. Initially the data employed will come from ground-based surveys, but a major goal is to prepare for data arriving from ESA’s Cornerstone Mission Gaia, scheduled for launch in the second half of 2013.

(Senior) Postdoctoral Positions for Milky Way Research at the Max Planck
Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg (Reference 12-16) - JRID43616

The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg is seeking three ambitious and highly qualified post-doctoral researchers to strengthen and co-lead the research group on understanding the dynamical structure and the evolution of the Milky Way in a cosmological context with Prof. H.-W. Rix. The overall goal of the group is to analyze and model the data emerging from the suite of vast new spectroscopic and astrometric surveys that map the stellar body of our Galaxy; and to put these results in the context of stellar dynamical models and of ab initio disk galaxy formation simulations, in order to constrain the Galactic potential and formation history. Expertise and interest in large survey data analysis/management, in determining stellar properties from survey data, in dynamical modeling, and in cosmological disk galaxy formation would be particularly advantageous, but full consideration will be given to candidates with other astrophysical or data mining backgrounds.

unofficial summary description:

The Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge has vacancies for up to five postdoctoral researchers related to the Gaia-ESO Spectroscopic Survey. These are ERC-funded positions to work with Gerry Gilmore, the Gaia-ESO Survey Co-PI, on delivering the scientific potential of this ambitious project. The range of science goals is broad, covering all aspects of Milky-Way science. The positions are available starting April 1 2013, with a mix of 3-year and 5-year posts available.

Additional information:
The Gaia-ESO Spectroscopic Survey began observations in jan 2012. The Survey is allocated up to 300nights VLT time over 5 years, obtaining R=20000 and R=50000 spectra of 100000 stars. All galactic stellar populations are being surveyed. A brief overview is available in the ESO Messenger, no147, pp25-31.

These positions are to work in implementing the Survey, with particular focus on ensuring the considerable range of scientific potential is delivered.
