Abstract / Resumo
The Institute of Astronomy and Space Sciences in Portugal has recently seen its capabilities for ALMA research internationally recognized, being named by ESO as an ALMA Centre of Expertise. This is a result of an objective effort over the last few years to increase the national capability in the exploration of this revolutionary observatory. In this talk I will describe the responsibilities and capabilities of the Portuguese ALMA Centre of Expertise (PACE) and show the potential of ALMA in a wide variety of science fields, from our own Sun and Solar System, to galaxy formation and cosmology. We will start from basic principles of radio interferometry, towards the conception of one of the most challenging research institution in the world: ALMA.
