IA/U.Lisboa Seminar - The Gaia mission and the chronology of the Solar System - 3 novembro 2017

The ESA Gaia mission, launched in December 2013, is currently surveying the sky from the Sun-Earth Lagrangian Point (L2). It produces astrometry of stars and asteroids at the milliarcsec accuracy (V~20.7).

 

In September 2016 the first Gaia Data Release (GDR1) already came out, including 1.1 billion of stars with positions, and 2 million stars with positions and proper motions. The Second Data Release (GDR2) is approaching, and it will contain billions of stars with positions, proper motions, and parallaxes, and a sample of ~14.000 asteroids.

 

I will present the results obtained on Solar System Objects using the GDR1, and some preliminary results on the GDR2. I will then connect the properties of the Gaia mission to the determination of a new chronology of the Solar System, through the study of asteroidfamilies, and non-gravitational perturbation.
