Stellar populations as a probe of massive galaxy formation

Resumo

Massive galaxies are ideal laboratories to test our understanding of star formation and the general process of galaxy growth. Through detailed analyses of targeted spectral features, it is possible to disentangle the mixture of stellar populations into fundamental properties that reveal substantial differences in the formation mode of massive (early-type) galaxies, with respect to lower mass systems. In this seminar, I will present an overview of two aspects of the problem that have received special attention recently: The non-universality of the stellar initial mass function, and the two-stage growth mode of massive galaxies.
