Rational / History:
This is the XIV edition of an International Astronomical Union regional meeting that started over 35 years ago and has been cycling through Latin America.
From Santiago (1978), to Mérida (Venezuela, 1981), Buenos Aires (1983), Rio de Janeiro (1984), Mérida (México, 1986), Gramado (1989), Viña del Mar (1992), Montevideo (1995), Tonantzintla (1998), Córdoba (2001), Pucón (2005), Isla Margarita (2007), and Morélia (2010), Latin American Regional IAU Meetings (LARIM) have witnessed tremendous advances in astronomy world-wide, and particularly in Latin America. Throughout its 35 years long history, LARIMs have played an important role in bringing together scientists from our countries, fostering collaborations and interchanges at various levels and different areas.
The XIV edition of this meeting will take place in Florianópolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, during the last week of November 2013. Following the successful tradition of the LARIMs, the meeting will cover topics across the whole filed of astronomy, combining plenary sessions with review talks geared to non-specialists with invited talks and parallel sessions dedicated to sub-areas such as planetary systems, stars, stellar systems, star formation, ISM, galaxies, AGN, cosmology, high energy astrophysics, instrumentation, history, teaching and outreach.
Venue & Acommodation:
The conference will take place at the Oceania Convention Center, in Praia dos Ingleses, in the north-eastern region of the island of Florianópolis. Ingleses is a touristic beach with plenty of hotels within walking distance of the convention center. The www.larim2013.org.br page lists hotels. Participants are requested to do reservations themselves through the contacts given in the page. Quote LARIM2013 when contacting your chosen hotel. The arranged fee in the main option hotels is about R$280/day for a double room (breakfast included).
The LOC will organize a conference tour and dinner, details of which will be given later.
Registration, Abstract submission & Travel Grants:
We ask potential participants to pre-register at www.larim2013.org.br to help us in the preparations for the meeting. Pre-registrations are open.
Registration, submission of abstracts and applications for financial support for young astronomers will be dealt through www.larim2013.org.br starting from the 15th of April.
A restricted number of young astronomer grants will be awarded with IAU resources, which will cover the registration fee and hotel (shared room). Instructions on how to ask for travel grants will be available by April 15.
Fees:
Until August 31st, the registration fee is R$600 for doctors and R$300 for students. After this date the fees will be R$700 for doctors and R$350 for students.
PayPal is our preferred method of payment for the registration fee, but alternative methods, such as direct bank transfers can be accepted. Instructions on how to pay will be posted on the page shortly.
